At St. Joseph Hospital, we make each hospital stay as simple and comfortable as possible. We ask that you follow our guidelines in order to efficiently plan your hospital stay and treatments.

During the admission process, you will be asked for a copy of your insurance card, a form of picture identification (e.g., a driver’s license) and a copy of your Advance Healthcare Directive.

You will be asked to sign a Conditions of Admission form. This is your authorization for medical and/or surgical treatment. If you are having surgery, you will also be asked to sign a special consent for your surgery and the administration of anesthetics. If you are a parent for a minor or a legal guardian, you must sign these consent forms.

You will also receive a letter explaining that any physicians’ fees will be billed separately from the hospital bill. This includes bills from such specialists as the pathologist, radiologist, anesthesiologist, cardiologist, etc. These specialists are independent physicians and are not employees of the hospital.

You will then be escorted to your room. If you are having surgery, you will stay in the Surgical Prep Unit. During your hospital stay, if you have any questions regarding your bill, please contact the Admitting Department at 714-771-8185.

Your physician arranges for your admission to St. Joseph Hospital. He/she will provide you details on when you should arrive at the hospital, where to report and whether you will require pre-operative tests.

Call our Pre-Access Center at 714-771-8911 to pre-register or to discuss any questions that you might have. Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Obstetrics patients can also choose to complete the pre-registration packet they receive from their physicians. Once completed, the packet should be returned to:

Please be prepared to provide your insurance card(s) and information about the person who is the primary insurance carrier.

  • Along with your insurance cards, you may bring a few personal belongings to have during your hospital stay. These items may include sleep wear, a robe, slippers, toiletries, a toothbrush and a brush or comb. If you wear glasses or dentures, you’ll need those, too. (Please be sure to bring their protective containers.) It is helpful to mark your personal belongings with your name in the event they are misplaced. While the staff will take every reasonable precaution with your personal belongings, the hospital cannot be responsible for the breakage or loss of such articles.
  • If you have an Advance Healthcare Directive, bring a copy of it with you on the day of admission. If you are unable to bring a copy, our staff can assist you in completing an Interim Directive.

What shouldn't I bring?

  • Please leave large sums of money, credit cards, jewelry and valuables at home. If you choose to bring any of these items, we request that they be secured in the hospital’s safe. St. Joseph Hospital is not responsible for personal items, or for the loss of money or other valuables retained in patient rooms.
  • Also be aware that medications from home could interfere with any medications or prescriptions your physician orders during your hospitalization. Leave all medications (including aspirin) at home unless otherwise instructed by your physician. Any medication prescribed for you will be supplied by the hospital pharmacy. Please bring a list of your medications with you to the hospital.

Some health plans require that your pre-operative tests be performed at their contracted facilities. Though most are performed at our Outpatient Pavilion, please check with your physician to determine where your tests will be performed.
