Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a quick test that compares the blood pressure in your arms to blood pressure in your ankles. Lower pressure in your ankles can mean you have peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition that causes poor blood flow due to narrowed arteries.
CT angiography combines a CT scan with an injection of contrast dye to enhance the images. The injection is administered prior to the scan and allows your care team to see blockages or narrowing of the blood vessels to help them make a diagnosis.
A duplex ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses both traditional and doppler ultrasound to understand how blood moves through your blood vessels. Soundwaves show images of vein and artery structure, while also measuring the speed of blood flow.
There are a few different types of duplex ultrasounds based on the area of the body. For example, a carotid duplex ultrasound focuses on the carotid artery in your neck.
Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) specifically for your arteries and veins. An MRA uses magnets and radio waves to produce images of your blood vessels and blood flow. It’s a noninvasive alternative to an angiogram, helping your doctor detect any narrowed or blocked blood vessels.
Vascular Surgery Treatments

During vascular surgery, your surgeon repairs damaged or blocked blood vessels by removing blockages or placing stents to help keep vessels open and improve blood flow.
Depending on your condition, treatment may involve open surgery or a minimally invasive procedure, which often allows for a faster recovery.
Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to open a blocked artery. In this procedure, your doctor places a tiny balloon inside the artery and uses it to push against plaque buildup, which makes room for blood to flow. Your doctor may also insert a small tube called a stent to help keep your artery open.
Aortic aneurysm repair, also known as endovascular stent repair, is a minimally invasive procedure that helps treat aortic aneurysms in the abdomen. Without treatment, an aneurysm, or bulge in the blood vessel, can rupture, leading to a heart attack or stroke.
During endovascular stent repair, your surgeon uses a small cut in the stomach to access the aneurysm. They place a metal and mesh-lined tube called a stent graft into the aneurysm to reduce pressure on the walls of your blood vessel.
Carotid endarterectomy is a procedure to remove plaque buildup from the carotid arteries in your neck, which can prevent stroke. Typically, a surgeon makes a cut in the front of the neck to access the carotid artery for plaque removal and then stitches or patches it closed.
Carotid angioplasty and stenting is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat narrowing or blockage of the carotid arteries caused by plaque buildup, helping to reduce the risk of stroke. During the procedure, your doctor accesses the carotid artery through a blood vessel in your arm, leg, or collarbone. A small balloon is inflated to widen the narrowed artery (angioplasty), and a small mesh tube called a stent is then placed to keep the artery open and improve blood flow to the brain.
An embolectomy is a procedure to remove a blood clot that is lodged inside a blood vessel. The clot can prevent blood flow and even move to a different part of the body, such as the lungs, which can cause pulmonary embolism.
You may receive an embolectomy as a minimally invasive procedure or as a traditional open-heart surgery.
Endovascular surgery is minimally invasive surgery that uses small tubes called catheters to remove blood clots from blood vessels without the need for large incisions. During this procedure, a surgeon usually fixes damaged blood vessels and restores blood flow, which can lower your risk of heart attack or stroke.
Stent grafting is a minimally invasive procedure in which a surgeon inserts a tube made of metal and fabric called a stent graft into an artery to help keep it open. Often, stent grafting treats people with aneurysms or plaque buildup in the arteries.
A thrombectomy is a procedure to remove a blood clot, also called a thrombus, from an artery or vein. You may need immediate treatment if the blood clot blocks blood flow to an organ, such as the kidneys or brain. A thrombectomy can be open surgery or minimally invasive surgery, which doesn’t require a large incision.
Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a blockage from the carotid artery in the neck, which can prevent stroke. During TCAR, a surgeon makes a small cut in the neck to remove plaque buildup, while directing blood flow away from the brain to protect it from any loose plaque. Then, they insert a tube called a stent into the artery to hold it open.
