#1 in the Region for Award-Winning Cardiac Care

For over 50 years, Covenant Medical Group’s cardiology experts have served as trusted leaders and providers of the largest cardiology practice in Lubbock.

We provide the most advanced, state-of-the-art heart and vascular care to patients throughout West Texas and eastern New Mexico in a centralized location with convenient street-level parking.

We’re proud to be the first in the region to provide cardiac PET/CT scans, considered the gold standard in cardiac perfusion imaging by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. We’re not just improving individual outcomes – we’re elevating the standard of care for our entire community.

Your care team

Cardiac electrophysiologists

Covenant Medical Group’s expert electrophysiologists are first in their class, caring for individuals with arrhythmia, or heart rhythm disorders. Our electrophysiology physicians specialize in treating arrhythmias using cardiac ablation, implantable devices like pacemakers and cardioverter-defibrillators and other innovative therapies.

Cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons

Our cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons offer virtually every type of elective and emergent surgery for heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, aortic aneurysm and congestive heart failure. Not only are they experts in traditional cardiac surgery techniques, they’re also at the forefront of emerging technologies.

They’ve been instrumental in implementing cardiac programs for our community, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, helping us become Lubbock’s first choice for heart care.

Our team of doctors bring diverse knowledge and experience – including both cardiology and interventional cardiology board certification – to offer you the very best in heart care, backed by our genuine compassion for all your needs.

The conditions that we treat include:

At Covenant Cardiology Associates West, we know that accurately diagnosing the cause of a heart or vascular problem is the first step in planning effective treatment.

We perform a wide array of cardiac imaging, screenings and tests, including:

For more information about the different cardiac diagnostic services we offer, please call our office at the number above or visit our Heart Screening service page.

Through minimally invasive surgical techniques, we’re able to help patients potentially shorten their hospital stay, reduce the chance of complications or infection and experience less post-operative pain compared to traditional surgery.

Some minimally invasive surgical techniques that we perform include:

Your surgeon will determine if you’re a candidate for minimally invasive surgery and discuss options with you.

For many people living with heart disease, there may come a time when you need surgery or a procedure in the hospital.

We provide expert surgical treatment, along with the post-care support you need to fully recover, which could include:

  • Adult congenital defect repairs
  • Arrhythmia surgery
  • Bloodless heart surgery
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Heart bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • Maze and mini-maze procedures
  • Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy
  • Septal defect repair for atrial septal defect (ASO) or patent foramen ovale (PFO)
  • Vein harvesting

Cardiac PET/CT Scans: Advanced Imaging for Your Heart

Cardiac PET/CT scans are a groundbreaking diagnostic technology that provide highly accurate, non-invasive insights into your heart health. Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or managing a known condition, our cardiac PET/CT imaging offers clarity, comfort and confidence in your care decisions.

Cardiac PET/CT is a specialized imaging test that evaluates blood flow and heart function. It uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to capture detailed images of your heart in both resting and stress phases.

Unlike traditional stress tests, a cardiac PET/CT provides superior resolution and sensitivity, allowing doctors to detect disease before symptoms appear.

This imaging scan is especially valuable for:

  • Assessing myocardial viability
  • Diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Guiding treatment plans

Cardiac PET/CT scans are considered the most reliable method for cardiac perfusion imaging by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

Cardiac PET/CT scans are recommended for individuals with:

  • Difficulty tolerating longer imaging sessions
  • History of heart attacks or cardiac events
  • Prior heart procedures, like angioplasty or bypass surgery
  • Risk factors or family history of heart disease
  • Symptoms of CAD, including chest pain, fatigue or shortness of breath

Speak with your cardiologist if you’d like more information on cardiac PET/CT scans.

Inclusive and accessible

Cardiac PET/CT scans are effective even for patients with pacemakers, obesity or other factors that may interfere with traditional imaging. Covenant’s investment in this technology ensures that advanced cardiac care is available close to home for patients across West Texas and eastern New Mexico.

Lower radiation, greater comfort

The scan uses short-lived tracers, resulting in lower radiation exposure. Most tests take less than an hour, and the process is non-invasive – no surgical procedures or injections into the heart.

Personalized treatment planning

By evaluating myocardial blood flow and identifying viable heart tissue, a cardiac PET/CT scan helps physicians tailor treatments to each patient’s unique needs. It also supports long-term monitoring and management of heart conditions.

Unmatched diagnostic accuracy

Cardiac PET/CT scans can detect even subtle abnormalities in blood flow, making it more precise than older imaging methods like single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). It’s particularly effective when other tests are inconclusive or when patients have complex conditions.

Before your appointment, you’ll need to follow specific preparation directions from your doctor, these include:

  • 48 hours before: Refrain from taking any blood thinner, antiplatelet, bronchodilator or vasodilator medications, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
  • 24 hours before: Avoid caffeine for the full 24 hours prior to your scan.
  • 4 hours before: Fast from all foods and beverages per your doctor’s instructions. You can drink water, juice and electrolyte beverages like Gatorade®. Patients with diabetes should bring their diabetic medications to the appointment and wait until they can be taken with food.

If you have any questions, please give us a call at the number above.
