About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of thoracic cancer that begins in the lungs. It is often caused by exposure to tobacco, though there are rising numbers of patients being diagnosed with lung cancer who have never smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke.

We offer a wide range of advanced treatment options for our lung cancer patients, from diagnosis to post-treatment support. But your care begins well before treatment. We start taking care of you as soon as you walk through our doors. Your multidisciplinary care team works with you to design an individualized care plan, which may include one or more of the following:

Systemic therapies travel through the bloodstream and affect cells in other body parts. They are used for patients whose cancer has spread to other areas of the body or if there’s a high risk of spread. Sophisticated genetic analysis allows us to target therapies to specific DNA mutations that cause cancer cells to develop and grow. Systemic therapies include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Clinical trials
  • Immunotherapy
  • Molecularly targeted therapy

Surgical therapies involve an operation or procedure to remove cancer from the body. Surgery may be the main treatment for some invasive cancers, but it’s only one part of the entire treatment plan. Surgical therapies include:

  • Lung lobectomy
  • Open lung wedge resection
  • Pneumonectomy
  • Segmentectomy
  • Sleeve lobectomy
  • Video-mediastinoscopy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation from a source like X-rays or photons to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors. It may be part of a treatment plan that also includes systemic therapies and/or surgery. Radiation is sometimes used to help ease a patient’s pain or discomfort. Radiation therapies include:

  • Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT)

Testing and Diagnostics

Your doctors use many diagnostic and prognostic tools to learn which therapies work best to treat your cancer. Taking into account factors specific to your case, like cancer type and the genetic or molecular profile of the tumor, these tools may include one or more of the following:

  • Gene expression assay
  • Genomic tumor profiling (ALK, BRAF, EGFR, MET, NTRK 1/2/3, KRAS, RET, ROS)
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • PET/CT scan

One thing most patients can count on is that cancer care takes a team! Your multidisciplinary team may include board-certified medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and thoracic surgeons. They use the most advanced techniques to diagnose and treat your lung cancer. One such radiation treatment uses BrainLab ExacTrac Dynamic, which is more accurate and precise than other radiation delivery methods. Our care teams also use MONARCH robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, which helps diagnose lung cancer earlier.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but access to great care hasn’t always been the same for everyone.
