It's the way we care for our smallest patients and moms that makes us So Providence.

Let’s Plan Together

When you choose an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) to be your partner through pregnancy and delivery, we’ll help you create a birth plan that fits your preferences. We respect and honor your plan–understanding that preferences and safety concerns can change throughout your pregnancy and right up to delivery day.

Developing a birth plan is easier with an OB-GYN who listens to you, understands you, and shares in your decision-making. Need help finding an OB to fit your personality and preferences? Take this list of questions with you to your first appointment to help you find an OB-GYN partner who’s right for you.

A Modern Labor and Delivery Approach

When you go into labor, you can expect the same level of supportive, compassionate, and safe care you’ve received throughout your pregnancy. We’ll respect your birth plan, and you’ll be able to choose when and if pain medication will be used. Your labor and delivery experience will be based on your preferences and what is safest for you and your baby at the time of delivery.

Most babies can be born with very little medical help, and that’s good news because when we minimize surgical intervention, we help ensure a safer delivery. We’ll monitor your health and the health of your baby during the labor and birthing process. Unless necessary, we’ll work with you to avoid common interventions like inducing labor or episiotomy to help prevent dangerous complications that can delay healing.

Lower Risk. Higher Confidence.

At the same time, we know every birth is different, as is every new mom. If you choose an epidural for pain relief–even if you change your mind from your birth plan–we will honor your request when it’s safe to do. You are in charge of your birth experience, and that means easing your discomfort.

Let’s Start this Journey Together

If you’re ready for an outstanding pregnancy experience, start by choosing an OB-GYN who will be a good fit for you and will prioritize your safety. It’s so important to find someone who listens to you, doesn't pressure you, and gets you–both your head and your heart.

It’s your pregnancy. Let Providence be your partner.

For a list of our pediatricians, along with information about their education, training and location, search our provider directory. For more help in selecting the right doctor for your family, call us at 877-459-3627 (DOCS).

Visitors

Please read our current visitor policy

Contacting your nurse

Please call her pocket phone, the extension is on the whiteboard in your room.

Keeping baby safe

Anyone who comes to pick up your baby must have a name badge with a pink band. Your baby’s bands should be checked against your bands when the baby is brought back to you. If the HUGS tag or identification band comes off, alert your nurse immediately. Your baby must be with a banded adult or staff member at all times.

Important to remember

Always place your baby on his/her back to sleep.

Overnight guests

Rooms are designed to allow your spouse or other adult to comfortably stay overnight with you, but please choose just one guest.

Meal options

Breakfast is available 7 - 9:30 a.m. and lunch/dinner is available 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Meal orders can be placed anytime from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. by calling exts. 6777 or 6780. If you get a recording, please leave your order after the beep. For spouses and visitors, the cafeteria is on the 1st floor of the Northwest Tower and is open daily from 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. - 12 a.m.

Housekeeping

Service is available daily until 3 p.m. Ask your nurse if you need housekeeping after-hours.

Educational TV

The Newborn Channel is 31.1 (English) and 33.1 (Spanish).

Taking walks with baby

When walking in the hallway, keep your baby in his or her bassinet and make sure the bassinette is flat, not inclined. It’s also a good idea to keep a bulb syringe in your baby’s bassinette and be familiar with how to use it.

Going home

Discharge is typically at 11 a.m. and you can be picked up at the Val Mesa Entrance, which is located on the south side of the medical center, next to the tennis center.

When your physician decides you are ready to leave the hospital, a discharge order will be written. You should make arrangements in advance with a family member or friend to help you when it is time to go home.

Your physician and nurse will give you instructions about post-hospital care. If you have questions, please be sure to ask. If there is someone who will be caring for you after discharge, it is a good idea to have this person present. An electronic copy of your discharge information is available by request.

Forever committed to the health and wellbeing of mothers and children, our Level III NICU offers round-the-clock, state-of-the-art care to critically ill newborns. A high-risk infant born in a hospital with a Level III NICU has a significantly higher chance of survival than an infant born at a hospital without a NICU.

Thanks to the devoted care of our team, most of the babies born at St. Jude Medical Center never require the help of our Level III NICU. But their parents have the confidence and peace of mind that comes from knowing that today's most advanced care is available if needed.

Only immediate family members are allowed in the NICU. Please contact the NICU for more information at 714-626-8522.

Pregnancy and birth take a toll on a woman’s body and often, along with a new bundle of joy comes one or more pelvic floor issues. Incontinence, painful sex, and pelvic or back pain are frequently experienced by new mothers.

If you are among the roughly 40 percent of women who experience a problem after birth, pelvic floor rehabilitation – a specialized type of physical therapy – can often eliminate your symptoms and make a significant difference in your health and well-being.

Too many women try to simply live with their symptoms and don’t seek treatment until years after they given birth, when the seemingly small problems – a “little” pain or leaking – have grown into larger, more serious issues. If your symptoms are still present at your six-week checkup, ask your doctor for a referral for pelvic floor therapy at St. Jude’s Centers for Rehabilitation. Our services are covered by all insurance plans.
