Erik Wexler

Executive vice president and chief executive of Providence Health & Services’ Southern California Region

The former chief executive for Tenet Healthcare’s Northeast Region, Wexler came to Providence in May 2016 to lead the Southland’s largest health care system.

Wexler leads a regional organization anchored by thirteen award-winning hospitals, over 90 outpatient centers, four physician foundations and Providence High School. The region spans across Southern California in Los Angeles County, Orange County and Apply Valley.

In announcing Wexler as chief executive of Providence Southern California, Mike Butler, president of operations and strategy for Providence, said, “Though we had many excellent candidates, Erik was the clear choice because of his experience serving large, diverse and dynamic communities and leading organizations toward the future of health care. He also is known for building strong relationships with employees, physicians, the community and other key audiences.

“We are committed to serving more people in Southern California, especially the poor and vulnerable, and Erik’s leadership style and experience are just what we need to lead this effort,” Butler said.

Wexler spent five years with Tenet, most recently as chief executive for Tenet’s Northeast Region where he oversaw operations in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Illinois. The region included two academic medical centers, two tertiary care teaching hospitals, five community acute care hospitals and two health plans.

Providence Southern California has approximately 35,000 employees – called caregivers – and more than 5,000 physicians on staff. Providence provides comprehensive quality and compassionate care from prenatal to end of life, offering specialties including cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, neonatal intensive care, women’s services, pediatrics, and emergency and trauma care, among others.

Before joining Tenet he was senior vice president of LifeBridge Health System and president of its Northwest Hospital. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and master’s in business administration from the University of Hartford in Connecticut.

Wexler and his wife Stephanie are outdoor enthusiasts and live in Newport Beach.
