Covenant Children's is proud to operate two emergency centers: our children's emergency center and our separate obstetric emergency department.

Don't take your child to an adult focused emergency center when you have the choice

Covenant Children's Hospital operates the only dedicated pediatric emergency center in the region – open 24/7, 365 days a year – staffed extensively by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians with special education and training in care of kids requiring emergency care. Other facilities, some of which may even hold out having pediatric emergency services, often use adult Emergency Medicine providers, internal medicine providers, and/or even trainees (Residents).

Experience matters

We don't just see kids in between seeing adults. We know pediatrics. We care for over 600 pediatric trauma patients a year – significantly more than any other facility in West Texas/Eastern New Mexico. We were the first, and remain the only ACS-verified Pediatric Trauma Center in Lubbock.

With more than 10 years’ experience operating a dedicated pediatric emergency center, our unit is staffed by physicians and registered nurses specially trained in pediatric emergency care. When compared to adult emergency centers, and adult emergency centers also seeing pediatrics, we typically have significantly shorter waits before your child is seen by a provider and able to either go home or be admitted.

Regional Outreach and Expertise

We are a Regional Leader in Pediatric Emergency Preparedness. We offer emergency department readiness assessments to regional hospitals to help them assess their current ability to best care for pediatric patients, and specific recommendations and resources to them to better prepare them to care for them. Emergency departments with high pediatric readiness have been shown to have significantly lower patient mortality/death, with about a quarter the deaths of hospitals with low pediatric readiness.

Other features include:

  • All private exam rooms

Covenant Children's is proud to offer Lubbock's only Obstetric Emergency Department.

At Covenant Children's we want what's best for mothers who may be experiencing complications – which is being seen immediately by an in-house, board-certified OB Hospitalist, who can most accurately assess your status. Through our Obstetric Hospitalist Program, we operate a three-bay, obstetric-specific emergency department. A first of its kind for our region, this department ensures our maternal patients receive the highest level of care and are evaluated immediately by a board-certified obstetrician.

Our board-certified OB Hospitalists are in-house 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to care for obstetric patients. This ensures that patients without an identified OB, and patients whose private physician cannot immediately respond, are quickly seen by a board-certified obstetrician. Quality and safety are two of our primary goals, and our OB Hospitalists help us provide the best possible care for the women of our community.

Our hospitalist physicians work with your primary OB/GYN doctor to give immediate care and help make decisions about hospital admission or discharge.

If you need immediate care, please present through the Children's Hospital Main Entrance and notify security/check-in personnel that you need to go to the OB ED. The OB ED is on the fourth floor - immediately adjacent to Labor and Delivery.

When should you come to the OB Emergency Department?
  • Concern about re-term labor
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Urological conditions, such as bladder infections or urinary tract infections
  • Conditions related to high-risk pregnancy (example: high blood pressure)
