Healthy for Life
In Sonoma County nearly 25% of low income 5-17 year olds are overweight or obese.
Healthy for Life, a school-based program, confronts this problem by providing nutritional information and physical education to Sonoma County children. We teach the benefits of a healthier lifestyle by encouraging the students to eat more fruits and vegetables, stay away from sugary beverages and incorporate physical activity into their daily lives.
Healthy for Life’s mission is to improve the health and physical fitness of children through physical and nutritional education activities.
Our program provides training to physical education specialists and elementary school teachers. We teach them how to engage their students in non-competitive games and activities that keep the children moving at a moderate to vigorous rate 70% of the time. Higher impact aerobics classes including Zumba, dance and boot camp also occur throughout the school year.
In addition, three healthy eating presentations are taught each year, and weekly nutritional tips are provided for students to share with their parents. Local organic produce is introduced to the children through our partnership with Harvest of the Month.
Who We Serve
Healthy for Life serves elementary and middle schools that are 50% or more Free and Reduced Lunch schools. Students participate at no cost to them or their families. The program is conducted during the school day.
