Breast Cancer Care at Providence St. Jude Medical Center

When you’re our patient, we don’t just treat your breast cancer – we treat you. As part of our commitment to women’s health, we pre-screen everyone getting a mammogram to see if they might benefit from genetic testing. As a result, we’ve found early-stage cancers that are easier to treat.

Throughout your entire cancer journey, you’ll have a dedicated breast nurse navigator at your side to help you manage treatment and get the support services you need.

About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of breast tissue. It’s more common in women, but men can get breast cancer too.

Our expert oncology team uses the most effective, leading-edge therapies to treat patients with breast cancer and its related conditions, including:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
  • Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
  • Invasive breast cancer
  • Other high-risk breast conditions

Meet the Team

At Providence, you'll have access to a vast network of dedicated and compassionate providers who offer personalized care by focusing on treatment, prevention and health education.

Testing and Diagnostics

Your doctors use many diagnostic and prognostic tools to determine which therapies work best to treat your cancer. Taking into account factors specific to your case, like cancer type and the genetic or molecular profile of the tumor, these tools may include one or more of the following:

  • Bone scan
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Gene expression assay
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • HER2/Neu
  • Hormone receptor (HR) status
  • Mammography (2D, 3D)
  • PET/CT scan
  • Ultrasound

Why Choose Us for Your Breast Cancer Care?

As our patient, you have access to the best specialists, robust research and a full range of support services for you and your loved ones – all close to home. We’re able to minimize the time between your diagnosis and treatment with coordinated, whole-person care that always puts you first.

Your personalized treatment plan depends on unique factors, from your diagnosis to your preferences. Your local oncologists meet regularly with other regional experts to discuss your case. These multidisciplinary tumor boards help us ensure you’re getting the very best treatment, so you don’t have to visit another doctor or specialist yourself. For breast cancer patients, we offer a shared journey program, in which newly diagnosed patients are paired with breast cancer survivors to help guide and support them.

One thing most patients can count on is that cancer care takes a team! Your multidisciplinary team may include board-certified oncologists, surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counselors, oncology nurses and breast nurse navigators. Our team uses state-of-the-art technology such as 3D tomography, which detects breast cancer better than standard 2D mammography. If you need surgery as part of your treatment, our world-class breast and plastic surgeons use the most advanced techniques, such as breast-sparing and reconstructive surgery.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but access to great care hasn’t always been the same for everyone. At Providence St. Jude Medical Center, we are deeply committed to making sure every patient we treat has access to the best care. One way we do so is through our St. Jude Neighborhood Health Centers, which provide mobile health services.

We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, spiritual, gender and sexual identities of each member of our diverse communities. In keeping with our Mission, Providence offers financial assistance programs that provide free and low-cost care to those who are eligible.

We are part of the Providence Cancer Institute in Orange County, which features world-class oncologists in four hospitals. As our patient, you have access to the largest community-based cancer network in the United States. This means that your local cancer care team shares knowledge and experience with other world-class clinicians across 51 hospitals in seven states. The power of our network is one of the reasons more than 1,400 newly diagnosed cancer patients choose Providence St. Jude Medical Center each year.

Providence is known for offering options – and hope – to patients seeking advanced therapies to treat their breast cancer. We partner with the Providence Research Center and other cancer research organizations. As our patient, you can participate in one of our many clinical trials. These include FDA-regulated trials to develop new cancer therapies.
