Behavioral and Emotional Skills Training (BEST)

Mon - Fri: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Caring for a child with emotional needs can be challenging. You’re never certain how to set clear expectations. And you question whether you’re managing their needs effectively.

We understand your frustration and concern. When your child exhibits challenging thoughts, feelings, or behaviors, you want to know you’re doing all you can to foster positive coping skills, healthy social-emotional development and self-esteem.

That’s why we’re proud to offer help and support with the Behavioral and Emotional Skills Training (BEST) program.

BEST is a therapist led, hospital-based day treatment program that provides intensive therapeutic treatment for children 7-12 years old. The program is designed for children who have behavioral and emotional problems related to past trauma or mental health issues. The program works to individually meet the needs of the child while improving their relationships with family and friends and school performance. Attendance ranges two to five days per week, based on the needs of the child.

We work closely with your family, local mental health providers, schools and other professionals to provide a program that meets the individual needs of your child. While enrolled, your child will work with professionals dedicated to their well-being, including a psychiatrist, registered nurse, licensed therapists, social worker and a Spokane Public School teacher.

Program goals

BEST is a day treatment program. Family therapy sessions will be scheduled with members of the team based on the needs of the child. The BEST program has four goals for parents. We want to help you:

  • Understand the basics of managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
  • Learn and apply your new skills consistently
  • Increase your confidence in managing your child’s challenging needs
  • Build a network of other caregivers for support after your training

BEST is a training program that teaches parents, families and caregivers proven ways to influence and promote positive behavior, develop unique behavior plans and set limits with your child.

The program uses the most up-to-date research and gives parents a structured training experience that shows you how to apply practical techniques for improving your child’s mental health.

We work closely with families, schools and other agencies to provide a program that works for your child and promotes healthy behaviors. Your child will work with a team of healing experts, including:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Registered nurses
  • Clinical social workers
  • Licensed mental health therapists
  • Spokane Public Schools instructors

To enroll, a professional in the community who works with the child will provide a history of the child’s mental and physical health by completing a referral. Once complete, the BEST team will work with your insurance company to obtain authorization. This can take one to 10 days depending on the insurance company’s response.

Upon approval, the BEST department will schedule an intake evaluation, determine eligibility and recommend the hours and number of days the child will be enrolled in the program.

The services provided include daily group therapy sessions, weekly family therapy, parent classes, and regular assessment/ management of medications by a psychiatrist.
Children will bring their own morning snack and lunch and will eat together.
