Providence surgeons perform minimally invasive, robotic-assisted and open surgeries. They work with anesthesiologists, nurses and other specialists in sophisticated suites equipped with the latest technologies and systems.
Our general surgeons treat many diseases and disorders, including traumatic injuries and emergencies. They may operate to find the source of pain, stop internal bleeding or remove diseased tissue. Specialists and subspecialists perform widely varied procedures from delicate eye operations to complex brain and spine procedures.
In most instances, your doctor will refer you to our surgeons if surgery is part of your treatment plan. Our surgeons work as a team to evaluate and treat a full range of conditions, including:

Minimally invasive procedures
Doctors sometimes use minimally invasive surgical procedures for diagnosis — such as colonoscopy — or to surgically remove or repair diseased organs or tissue.
During minimally invasive surgery, doctors use powerful image-enhanced technology and tools which enable surgeons to reach, view and repair tissues through just one or a few small incisions.
In some cases you can go home the same day as your surgery. After surgery you’ll feel less discomfort and your healing process will be faster than what’s typical for traditional open surgery.
Robotic-assisted surgery
The da Vinci robotic-assisted procedure is another alternative to both traditional open surgery and laparoscopic surgery, which involves a special video-guided scope and surgical tools.
During a robotic-assisted procedure, your surgeon's hands are at the controls of a computer-guided operating system. Guided by the da Vinci system, surgeons can perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions.
At Providence we want you to be fully informed and comfortable with your experience. Your care providers will tell you what to expect and guide you through every step.
It’s important for you to understand and follow all instructions from your doctors, nurses and care team. Please feel free to ask questions along the way. Your care providers will address any concerns and find extra help or support for you if you need it.
Before and after surgery
Before your surgery, a care coordinator will ask you for certain information about your condition, medical history and other details. This helps us to give you the best, safest care possible.
Your surgeon may want you to perform certain tests, have a preoperative appointment or use or stop taking certain medications before surgery.
At your pre-surgery appointment, you’ll have a chance to talk with your surgeon and other care providers. You’re encouraged to bring questions and ask about anything you don’t understand.
After surgery, you may have a short stay in a recovery room where nurses will closely monitor your condition. Once you’re alert, your doctor and care providers will talk with you and tell you what to expect and what’s next for your recovery.
Education and services
Ask your care providers about support groups, services or educational resources that may help you learn more about your surgery and condition or find personal assistance with related challenges such as insurance, stress management or home care.
