Get ready for one of the most memorable events of your lifetime – the grand entrance of your newborn.
At Providence Sacred Heart Birth Place, you make the birth plan for your baby. And our highly skilled doctors and nurses will support your labor of love in any way you wish.
To help you feel at home, we provide comfortable birth rooms with a bed, jacuzzi bathtub, rocking chair, birthing balls, TV, music player and a day bed for your support person. If you choose to have anesthesia, our anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists are here for you 24 hours a day.
We also offer the Antepartum Unit for women having difficulty in pregnancy and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborns who need specialized care.
When your baby is born, you’ll hear the sound of chimes softly ringing throughout the birth place.

Depending on your needs and wishes, your care team at Providence Sacred Heart Birth Place may include:

Safety and security
We take care of your safety. In labor and delivery you will be allowed up to five visitors, who will wear identification bands. All visitors must sign in and receive a visitor pass every day they visit.
If you would like anesthesia to help relieve or manage pain during your labor and delivery, our anesthesia specialists are here to support you.
Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for your little one, but for many mothers and babies, it takes a little practice and patience. At Providence Sacred Heart Birth Place, our nurses and lactation consultants help you with:
- Babies with special needs
- Comfortable positioning
- Correct attachment
- Engorgement
- Pumping
- Other common breastfeeding challenges
After you leave the hospital, our lactation consultants are available for phone consultations or personal appointments at the Women’s Center. Fees for this service may be paid, in full or in part, by your insurance. We are committed to helping you breastfeed your baby successfully. At Providence Sacred Heart Birth Place, we offer a wide range of classes to support you before and after your baby is born.
Learn techniques to breastfeed your baby successfully. Our breastfeeding class will cover latching on and positioning, when to feed, how to know when your baby is getting enough, breast care and where to get help. You can register for breastfeeding classes here.
Prepare for your baby’s arrival. Learn what to expect during labor and delivery. Our certified childbirth class Instructors will:
- Help you identify the signs of labor
- Teach you what happens to your body as your baby is born
- Show you methods for coping with contractions, such as breathing techniques, relaxation and visualization.
- Teach the pros and cons of medications
We’ll talk about newborn care, breastfeeding, diapering, bathing and how to choose a pediatrician. The cost is $75. Call 509-474-2400 or use the form to register. Medicaid of Washington accepted.
Learn how to help yourself through labor without medication - or to postpone an epidural. You and your labor companion will practice breathing, relaxation and comfort techniques. Cost is $30. Please bring two pillows and a blanket. To register and pay online, use this form.
Discover your body’s natural physical signs of fertility. The Natural Method of Family Planning can help you space out or avoid pregnancies. NFP is also helpful for low-fertility couples who would like to achieve a pregnancy. The basic course consists of one class each month for three consecutive months. This class is for parents, grandparents, babysitters – anyone who cares for children, birth to age 5. You will learn:
- How to properly give CPR and help a choking infant or young child
- Basic first aid, including care for minor burns, cuts, allergic reactions, bleeding, head injuries, eye injuries, bites, stings and seizures
- When to call 911
- Newborn care, including feeding, soothing a fussy baby and swaddling
