Meet the Team

At Providence, you'll have access to a vast network of dedicated and compassionate providers who offer personalized care by focusing on treatment, prevention and health education.

Why Choose Us for Heart and Vascular Care?

As the only heart transplant center in the region, we are a heart destination for patients from Washington, northeast Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Our comprehensive, leading-edge treatments are just one of the reasons you can trust Providence with your advanced heart disease care. Here are six more:

For patients with advanced stages of heart failure, your plan may include nonsurgical and surgical options based on your wants and needs. We also help you optimize the quality of your life. And we continue to support you through your entire heart health journey. This patient-centered approach is why patients have trusted Providence Heart Institute – Advanced Heart Disease & Transplant with their care for more than 30 years.

We’re the only local heart transplant center, so if you need a transplant, your specialists may refer you to our team for evaluation. We’ll guide you through the entire process, from finding a match to preparing for your procedure. Steps involve extensive screening, including physical checkups, a medical history review and various types of testing. You can also discuss your financial, psychological and social needs with your team. After your procedure, you and your doctors work together to create a long-term care plan that protects your new heart and overall health.

When end-stage heart failure sent our patient Greg Soumokil to the Intensive Care Unit, his Providence Spokane Heart Institute care team knew he didn’t have time to wait for a donor heart transplant. We opted for a temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH), a technology so innovative that fewer than 20 patients nationwide had one at the time of Greg’s surgery. This artificial heart allowed Greg to return home to his family while he waited for a heart transplant.

Another innovative therapy we provide is robotic ventricular assist device (VAD) therapy, a long-term treatment for patients who are not candidates for heart transplantation. In addition, we offer VAD as a bridge-to-transplant for patients too ill to wait for a donor heart to become available.

Your heart care team may include specialists in heart failure and transplant medicine, transplant surgeons, cardiac rehabilitation specialists and other caregivers who provide you with personalized care before and after any surgical procedure. You also have access to multidisciplinary support services from nutritionists, pharmacists, behavioral health experts, palliative caregivers and social workers who provide holistic care.

If you have advanced heart failure, you can be confident knowing our team has an in-depth understanding of the disease, its complexities and the various stages of care. This care may include managing symptoms and medications, slowing the progression of the disease or performing surgical treatments. Our experts provide the latest innovations and techniques – such as implanted devices, mechanical hearts and heart transplants – to improve outcomes.

We understand that the impact of heart disease is greater in some communities. Genetics plays a part, but unequal access to great health care is also a factor. At Providence, we make sure each of our patients has access to the best heart care. As part of this commitment, we also offer social work services. In keeping with our Mission, Providence offers financial assistance programs that provide free and low-cost care to those who are eligible.

We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, spiritual, gender and sexual identities of each member of our diverse community. We welcome all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. We aim to treat every patient equally and with dignity – whoever you are, and wherever you are in your journey.

We are part of the Providence Heart Institute of Spokane, which features world-class cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiovascular and vascular surgeons, and specialty trained nurses, therapists and advanced care teams throughout the Inland Northwest. Every heart patient at Providence benefits from our local experts, with extended connectivity to a collaborative network that includes award-winning physicians, scientists, researchers and caregivers across 51 hospitals in seven states. The power of our network is one of the reasons more than 450 people with advanced heart disease choose us for their care each year.

Patient Stories

Brian Starr is getting a second chance at life. He jokes that his transplant team was like an entourage: “The doc and assistant. The transplant coordinator. The person doing recording and the pharmacist. There was an entire team in the room to attend to me. It was quite a scene.” Read Brian’s story

Brian Starr

“I appreciate the physical therapists who helped me by pushing me to walk the halls of the floors I was on, and the different methods they taught me to work on being self-sufficient until I had recovered enough.”
